Reminiscent of the industrial demand for precious metals, these workers toil away in hazardous conditions for little reward. This new digital revolution bears a striking parallel to the Chinese lithium mines, where valuable resources are extracted to fuel modern technological advancements, but this time, the mines are of data and the workers – often invisible, underpaid and overworked – are largely from Kenya.

The unseen labour force behind AI technologies, such as ChatGPT, are these Kenyan AI Ghost Workers, who are remunerated as little as $1 dollar and 87 cents an hour. They toil in the depths of data mines, sifting through the sewage of online text, bearing witness to the often offensive and damaging material that constitutes the vastness of digital waste. Their task is not merely to label, but to build the guardrails of safety and non-bias for the AI’s functioning.

This digital exploitation, akin to the physical exploitation in lithium mines, has created a new class of quasi-slave labour. These workers are subjected to mental and emotional tolls, analogous to the physical tolls faced by miners. The deleterious effects of such working conditions on their mental health are not adequately addressed, primarily due to the invisibility of their roles in this industry. Their monumental contribution to the development of an unbiased, safe AI is frequently unseen and undervalued.

Despite their role being vital to the production and maintenance of AI, the socio-economic conditions of these workers remain precarious. Struggling against low wages, job insecurity, and the adverse psychological effects of their work, they represent the human cost of the AI revolution. The comparison to lithium mines is not incidental. These workers, paid between a paltry $1.32 and $2 per hour, are charged with the task of scrutinising and labelling tens of thousands of text snippets, some of which contain graphic descriptions of explicit sexual abuse and violence.

The human cost of such work is substantial. Many employees have reported experiencing psychological distress from their exposure to such traumatic content. Yet, despite this emotional toll, their pivotal role in ensuring the safe functioning of AI systems like ChatGPT often goes unrecognised and underappreciated. The precarity of their work stands in stark contrast to the glossy narrative of efficiency and progress that technology often touts, serving as a potent reminder that the power of AI is still heavily reliant on human labour.

Amid the rush of investors flooding billions of dollars into the generative AI sector, the troubling working conditions of data labellers unveil a more unsettling reality. The glamour and promise of AI, it turns out, is underpinned by hidden labour, often outsourced to the Global South, that can be both damaging and exploitative. These unseen workers, who navigate the murkiest corners of the digital realm, remain marginalised and undervalued even as their labour fuels industries worth billions.

Throughout his discourse on the myriad potentials and dangers of AI technology, Altman does not mention, even in passing, the crucial role played by the so-called Ghost Workers. These individuals, located in countries such as Kenya, toil behind the scenes for a pittance, exposed to the traumas of the internet’s underbelly, all in the name of curating a safe and bias-free AI. The stark absence of this discussion raises critical questions about Altman’s ethical compass and OpenAI’s social responsibilities.

Altman’s reflections on the power and control dynamics surrounding AI are steeped in paradox. He insists on the human control aspect of AI yet overlooks the human control – and suffering – at the base of the AI pyramid: the Ghost Workers. His notion of ‘safety limits’ becomes questionable when juxtaposed with the precarious and psychologically taxing conditions under which these data labellers work.

His lofty vision of AI as an ‘amplifier of human will’ rings hollow when viewed against the dehumanising conditions of the data mines, where workers are merely tools in the relentless quest for technological supremacy. Yet the question remains: when will we finally acknowledge that the forfeiture of our collective soul is too high a price for technological advancement? That the sheen of progress dulls when it is shadowed by exploitation and neglect? It’s a question that demands reflection and action from all of us in this digital age. As we navigate the complexities of AI, it is our responsibility to ensure that we do not lose sight of the human element, that we do not forsake those who labour in the digital mines for the dazzling allure of technological progress.
